Born July 19, 1910, in Quemchi, Chiloé Province. Chilean journalist and author. Member of the Communist Party of Chile. The son of a sailor.

Coloane tried many professions before he became a writer. His first important book was a collection of realistic stories entitled Cape Horn (1941), which showed the harsh life of those living in the south of Chile. The struggle of man against nature and an exposé of social injustice constituted the central themes of his books Route of the Whales (1962; Russian translation, 1971) and Tierra del Fuego (1956; Russian translation, 1963).
