Caso y Andrade, Alfonso

 

Born Feb. 1, 1896, in Mexico City; died there Dec. 1, 1970. Mexican archaeologist and ethnologist. Specialist in the history of pre-Columbian cultures and the ethnology of the modern Indian population of Mexico.

From 1949 to 1968, Caso served as director of the Instituto Nacional Indigenista. He conducted excavations of archaeological remains in the state of Oaxaca (Monte Albán, 1931–32 and 1934–35; Mitla, 1934–35) and at other sites.
