having abnormally short fingers or toes, an inherited characteristic in man (and some other animals), in which the phalanges are short and partially fused, and may even be reduced in number. The condition is controlled by a dominant autosomal gene, which was the first human Mendelian dominant gene discovered (see MENDELIAN GENETICS).
