Crawford, John

Crawford, (John Wallace) “Captain Jack”

(1847–1917) scout, author; born in County Donegal, Ireland. He came to the U.S.A. in 1854 and worked as a coal miner. He served with the Union forces in the Civil War and as a scout in campaigns against the Sioux and Apache Indians. He established a ranch in New Mexico and wrote books and plays, including The Poet Scout (1879).
