DeVries, Peter

(1910–93) editor, writer; born in Chicago. After an extremely varied early career he became editor of Poetry (1938–44), then joined the New Yorker editorial board (1944–87) as a protégé of James Thurber. He wrote some two dozen witty novels known for their relentless puns and sophisticated satire of suburban life. His best-known works include Tunnel of Love (1954), Reuben, Reuben (1964), and Consenting Adults (1980).
