Erik Theodor Werenskiold
Werenskiold, Erik Theodor
Born Feb. 11, 1855, in Vinger; died Nov. 23, 1938, in Oslo. Norwegian realist painter and graphic artist.
Werenskiold studied in Oslo (1874-75), Munich (1875-80), and Paris (1880’s). He was influenced by W. Leibl and the French impressionists. He did genre paintings (Peasant Funeral, 1885, National Gallery, Oslo), many portraits, and landscapes (Pine Over Snow, 1923, R. Meyer’s collection, Bergen) and illustrated popular fairy tales and legends (The Book of Kings by Snorri Sturluson, 1896-99, and many others).
