[ka′skād ‚mik·siŋ] (electricity) A mechanism for ion-beam mixing of a film and a substrate in which the recoil of an atom from a collision with an incident ion initiates a series of secondary collisions among the film and substrate atoms, leading to transfer of atoms from the substrate into the film as well as from the film into the substrate.
