Boxing Day Tsunami A major climatological disaster caused by an earthquake with a magnitude of 9.1 to 9.3 on the Richter scale, caused by subduction which triggered a series of devastating tsunami along the coasts of most land masses bordering the Indian Ocean, killing at least 230,000 people in 11 countries, and inundating coastal communities with waves up to 30 meters/100 feet high.
