Complex Instruction Set Computer

complex instruction set computer

[¦käm‚pleks in′strək·shən ‚set kəm‚pyüd·ər] (computer science) A computer in which relatively high-level or complex hardware incorporating microcode is used to implement a relatively large number of instructions. Abbreviated CISC.

Complex Instruction Set Computer

(CISC) A processor where each instruction can perform severallow-level operations such as memory access, arithmeticoperations or address calculations. The term was coined incontrast to Reduced Instruction Set Computer.

Before the first RISC processors were designed, many computerarchitects were trying to bridge the "semantic gap" - todesign instruction sets to support high-level languages byproviding "high-level" instructions such as procedure call andreturn, loop instructions such as "decrement and branch ifnon-zero" and complex addressing modes to allow datastructure and array accesses to be compiled into singleinstructions.

While these architectures achieved their aim of allowinghigh-level language constructs to be expressed in fewerinstructions, it was observed that they did not always resultin improved performance. For example, on one processor it wasdiscovered that it was possible to improve the performance byNOT using the procedure call instruction but using a sequenceof simpler instructions instead. Furthermore, the morecomplex the instruction set, the greater the overhead ofdecoding an instruction, both in execution time and siliconarea. This is particularly true for processors which usedmicrocode to decode the (macro) instruction. It is easierto debug a complex instruction set implemented in microcodethan one whose decoding is "hard-wired" in silicon.

Examples of CISC processors are the Motorola 680x0 familyand the Intel 80186 through Intel 486 and Pentium.
