Ciceruacchio

(nickname of Angelo Brunetti). Born 1800 in Rome; died Aug. 10, 1849, in Ca’ Tiepolo, Rovigo. Italian revolutionary.

Ciceruacchio worked as a drayman in Rome. In 1846 and 1847 he helped organize mass protests in Rome that forced Pope Pius IX to implement certain liberal reforms. During the Revolution of 1848–49, Ciceruacchio took part in the defense of the Roman Republic. After the fall of the republic in July 1849, he and G. Garibaldi set out to aid revolutionary Venice, which was under siege by Austrian troops. On the way there, Ciceruacchio and his companions, including his sons Luigi and 13-year-old Lorenzo, were captured by the Austrians and shot.
