Divergence of Sea Water

zones in which surface currents in the world ocean diverge. These zones are formed by the uneven distribution of both the velocities of wind currents above the water surface and the density of the water. They may be traced most clearly in cyclonic circulations and in areas where there are abrupt changes by wind and currents to opposite directions and velocities. Because of the currents of water rising from the depths, the surface waters in the divergence zones are enriched with nutrient salts, which results in increased biological productivity. These zones are good regions for commercial fishing. Stable zones of divergence have been noted in the eastern parts of oceans in the temperate and subtropical latitudes.
