Carr, Emma Perry

(1880–1972) chemist, educator; born in Holmesville, Ohio. She was assistant professor and then professor of chemistry at Mount Holyoke College (1913–46), where she was not only an inspiring teacher but also an innovator in research programs. Over several decades she herself made significant contributions to both empirical and theoretical problems of analyzing organic molecules with ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy. Her research laboratory produced not only many theses and scientific papers but also inspired numerous young women to take up careers in science.
