a city in western Rumania on the Muresul River. Administrative center of the Hunedoara Region. Population, 36,000 (1969). Deva is a transportation junction. Its industries include food processing (meat-packing and others), clothing, woodworking, and printing enterprises. A major thermoelectric power plant and a large concentrating plant for the treatment of copper ore are located in Deva. First mention of the city dates from the 13th century.
