data entry program

An application program that accepts data from the keyboard or other input device and stores it in the computer. Because it establishes the data in the database, the data entry function should test for valid, known data such as city and state names, ranges of account numbers, etc. Data entry is part of many of today's interactive applications; however, in the past it was often a stand-alone program. See validity checking, table lookup, check digit and intelligent database.
