Botosani

a district in northeastern Rumania in the northern part of the Jijia basin. Area, 5,100 sq km; population, 469,600 (1968). Its administrative center is the city of Botoşani. The district is agricultural, producing wheat, sunflower seeds, potatoes, sugar beets, and flax. Industry is concentrated in the cities of Botoşani and Dorohoi and consists of textiles, garment-making, food-processing, metalworking, and woodworking. Quartz, limestone, and (in Dersca) peat are mined.

The textile industry (the large Moldova textile factory and the Respublica garment factory) and the food-processing industry (a sugar refinery, vodka and spirits distillery, and flour mill) are well developed in Botoşani. Children’s toys, furniture, and metal goods are also produced in Botoşani. The M. Aminescu State Theater is in the city. Botoşani has been well-known since the 14th century.
