BothropsBothropsa genus of poisonous reptiles of the family Crotalidae. Body length, 60 cm-2.5 m. Snakes in the genus lack a rattle. There are approximately 60 species, distributed in America (from southern Mexico to northeastern Patagonia). Asiatic spearheaded snakes (32 species, more often separated in the genus Trimeresurus) are sometimes assigned to Bothrops. The snakes are ovoviviparous. Some species live on trees and shrubs; one species is semiaquatic. The most common member is the fer-de-lance (B. atrox), which prefers sparse forests and plantations of sugarcane and bananas; it is nocturnal and feeds on lizards, rodents, and birds.
