BothidaeBothidae(left-eye flounders), a family of fishes of the order Pleuronectiformes. The body is rhomboid, with both eyes on its left side. The pelvic fins are asymmetric. The roe are pelagic. There are about 200 species, united in the following three subfamilies: Paralichthyinae (21 genera), Bothinae (13 genera), and Scophthalminae (four genera). The first two subfamilies are found in tropical and temperate latitudes, and the last is encountered only in temperate latitudes. In the USSR the Scophthalminae are found in the Black Sea, the Sea of Azov, the Sea of Japan, and—less frequently—the Barents Sea. The fishes are commercially valuable. REFERENCESNikol’skii, G. V.
