Federal style


An American neoclassical style coinciding with the first generation of the new republic. It blended Anglo-French influences in mainly mahogany or fruitwood pieces. The American eagle was the outstanding decorative feature.

(1780–1820)Low-pitched roofs, a smooth facade and large glass areas characterize this style. Geometric forms accentuate the rhythm of the exterior wall, which is elegant and intentionally austere. Although it rejected Georgian decoration, it retained its symmetry, pilaster-framed entrance, fanlight and sidelights. Windows were simply framed, and quoins were abandoned.
