Drizulis, Aleksandr Arvidovich

(also Aleksandr Arvidovich Drizul). Born June 29, 1920, in Pskov. Soviet state and party leader; historian; academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Latvian SSR (1963).

Drizulis graduated from the Moscow History and Archive Institute in 1942. He joined the CPSU in 1950 and was elected a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Latvia in 1966. Drizulis has held the posts of deputy chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Latvian SSR (1967-71), deputy director (1949-63) and director (1963-70) of the History Institute, and academician-secretary of the social sciences division of the Academy of Sciences of the Latvian SSR. In February 1970 he was elected secretary of the Central Committee and a member of the bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Latvia. His major works are on the history of the social and economic development of the Baltic region, on the October Revolution, and on the revolutionary movement in Latvia. He has been awarded the State Prize of the Latvian SSR (1967) and two orders.
