Carnian Stage

(name derived from the Carnic Alps), a lower stage of the Upper Triassic system (period). It was first identified in Austria in 1895 by the geologist E. Mojsisovics von Mojsvar; here the stage is represented by fine-grained reddish limestones containing ammonites (Arcestes, Tropites). In the USSR, Carnian beds have been identified in the Caucasus, in the Verkhoiansk Mountains, and on the Novosibirskie Islands, and they are extensively developed in the Crimean-Caucasian geosynclinal region and in the northeastern part of the USSR.
