CarnegieaCarnegieaa genus of treelike cacti. Its solitary species is the saguaro, or the giant cactus (Carnegiea gigantea). It has a tall columnar trunk (height, up to 10–12 m; diameter, up to 30–65 cm). It has numerous branches in the central part of the trunk that resemble candelabra. The flowers, which are white and funnelform, open at night. Each flower has approximately 3, 500 stamens and 2, 000 ovules. The fruits are juicy and edible. This cactus grows very slowly, no more than 1 m every 20–30 years; the plant lives 100–200 years. It is the dominant species in the deserts of Sonora, Arizona, and southeastern California, growing in isolation on hills and frequently along riverbanks. Carnegiea
