Carl Troll

Troll, Carl

Born Dec. 24, 1899, in Gabersee, near the city of Wasserburg, Bavaria; died July 21,1975, in Bonn. German geographer. Brother of W. Troll.

C. Troll became a professor at the University of Berlin in 1930 and at the University of Bonn in 1938. He was the president of the International Geographical Union from 1960 to 1964. Beginning in 1926, Troll took part in expeditions to high-mountain regions of North America, South America, Africa, and Central Asia.

Troll’s main works dealt with the study of relief, climate, vegetation, and their interrelationships, especially in high-mountain and tropical countries. He also investigated problems of landscape ecology.
