Bosnia-Hercegovina Uprising of 1882

Bosnia-Hercegovina Uprising of 1882

a national-liberation revolt in Hercegovina and Bosnia; the main causes were the Austrian occupation regime, the lack of any solution to the agrarian problem, national oppression, and Catholic dominance. The majority of the insurgents were peasants.

The immediate cause of the uprising was the imposition of military obligation by a law of Nov. 4, 1881. On the night of Jan. 10, 1882, a group of peasants attacked the gendarme barracks in Ulog. The revolt quickly spread through northwest Hercegovina and southwest Bosnia. During the rebellion, the insurgents created their own organ of civil authority, a majlis, in Ulog. In April 1882 the revolt was suppressed by the Austro-Hungarian occupation forces.
