Carlota-Joaquina
Born Apr. 25, 1775, in Aranjuez, Spain; died Jan. 7, 1830, in Queluz, near Lisbon. Wife of the Portuguese king Joáo VI and head of the clericalist and absolutist party.
With her son Miguel, Carlota-Joaquina organized a numberof unsuccessful plots and rebellions to overthrow Joáo VI, nullifythe gains of the bourgeois revolution of 1820, and restore anabsolutist regime in Portugal.
