A self-limited condition defined as the presence of persistently loose stools for = 4 weeks without identifiable cause, and occurring in absence of systemic illness; the diarrhoea is secondary in nature and does not respond to antibiotics, but resolves within several months.

Little inflammation on biopsy; faecal PMNs and intractable disease is said to distinguish CID from Brainerd diarrhoea.
