Chronicle of Events in South Russia

a chronicle compiled in the early 18th century by the L’vov canon Jan Józefowicz for the L’vov archbishop Konstanty Zieliński. Written in Latin, the chronicle covers the period from 1614 to 1700. The original has been lost and only manuscript copies have been preserved. Events are recounted year by year, and there is much valuable information about the organization of the church, political events in the Ukraine, the history of L’vov, and natural phenomena. Especially important is the description of the second siege of L’vov by B. Khmel’nitskii in 1655, based on a diary kept by an eyewitness, a L’vov student named Borzhentskii. The part of the chronicle dealing with the years 1634–90 was published in an abridged form in Polish in L’vov in 1854, and V. Antonovich published a shortened version of the text covering the years 1624–1700 in his Collection of Chronicles Relating to the History of South and West Russia (1888).
