Breathing is often shallow because of anaesthesia; the patient may be reluctant to breathe deeply and may have pain from an abdominal incision. In aftercare, the patient is shown how to support the operative site while breathing deeply and coughing, and is given pain medication as necessary. Fluid intake and output is measured, and the operative site is observed for colour and wound drainage. Fluids are given IV for 24–48 hours, until the patient's diet is gradually increased and bowel activity resumes. The patient is generally allowed to walk approximately 8 hours after surgery. The average hospital stay, dependent upon overall recovery status, ranges from 6 to 8 days.

Q. I am a little confused because the doctors will give her chemotherapy after surgery. Is this treatment good? My wife`s painful breast cancer was diagnosed last month. She was in complete distress and depression when she heard of her cancer. I was out of the country and so delayed her surgery. Today her surgery is over and the lump is removed. This is not a major surgery as we expected. But I am a little confused because the doctors will give her chemotherapy after surgery. I want to know, is this treatment good as I had heard that many side effects are involved with this treatment? I need some tips on this.A. Yes side effects are there but it does not mean they will harm her in a big way. Mostly it depends on your present general health and previous exposure to other treatments as well. General side effects are nausea, fatigue, anemia, odor loss, hair loss and diarrhea. But to control spread of cancer after surgery, chemotherapy is required and don’t worry unnecessarily.
