Bornholm disease

A coxsackievirus B infection first described on the Danish island of Bornholm.
Clinical findings
A usually self-limited viral illness characterised by sudden onset of spasmodic pain in the lower chest often with dyspnoea, nonspecific abdominal pain, myalgia, fever, headache and myocarditis.

Pulmonary embolism, pleural effusion, myocarditis, pericarditis, pneumothorax, Tietz syndrome, shingles.

Peptic ulcer, cholecystitis, hepatitis, subphrenic abscess.
Epidemiology
Transmitted oral-faecally with shared drinks, is highly contagious, occurs in the spring and fall in temperate climates, primarily affects children and young adults and causes severe disease in neonates.

Bornholm disease

An infection with a COXSACKIE VIRUS which causes sudden attacks of pain in the central lower chest and upper abdomen, with headache, fever, sore throat and general upset. These attacks may occur repeatedly over a period of several weeks. There is no specific treatment. (First reported on Bornholm island off the Danish coast).
