Born Jan. 30, 1894; died Aug. 28, 1943. King of Bulgaria from 1918 to 1943. He was the son of Ferdinand of Saxe-Coburg. In 1923 he helped to bring about the fascist coup d’etat of A. Tsankov. He pursued a pro-German foreign policy, which led in 1941 to the adherence of Bulgaria to the aggressive Berlin Pact of 1940 and in effect brought Bulgaria into World War II on the side of fascist Germany.
