Dashkesan

 

a town (since 1948); center of Dashkesan Raion, Azerbaijan SSR. Situated in a mountainous district on the Koshkarchai River (a tributary of the Kura) 40 km southwest of Kirovabad, with which it is linked by a highway. Population, 9,000 (1970). Iron ore is mined by the open method, and the town has an ore-dressing combine. An electric railroad runs from the Alabashly station (on the Tbilisi-Baku line) to the mines. The ore is transported primarily by telpher and is used mainly at the metallurgical plant in Rustavi (Georgian SSR).
