(krō'mō-bak-tē'rē-ŭm vī-ō-lā'sē-ŭm) A motile, gram-negative, non-spore-bearing rod found in soil in tropic and subtropic environments. A cause of human infections including septicemia, pneumonia, wound infections, and abscesses; infection can be rapidly fatal and may relapse after cessation of antibiotic therapy.
