Darvaza

an urban-type settlement in Ashkhabad Raion, Turkmen SSR. Located in the Karakum desert, 256 km north of Ashkhabad, with which it is linked by motor-vehicle and air transport. Population, 5,000 (1970). There are deposits of natural gas in the area.
