BooneBoone.1 City (1990 pop. 25,186), seat of Boone co., central Iowa, on the Des Moines River; inc. 1865. It is a railroad and industrial center with plants making machinery, steel fabrications, and plastic signs. It was laid out (1865) by the railroad, which built a long, high double-track bridge there. In 1887 it annexed the nearby rival town of Boonesboro (founded 1851). 2 City (1990 pop. 12,915), seat of Watauga co., NW N.C., near the Blue Ridge Parkway. A tobacco market and cattle center located in a winter and summer mountain resort region, Boone also has varied manufacturing industries. The city is the seat of Appalachian State Univ. and the Appalachian Cultural Museum. Cone Memorial Park, the former estate of industrialist Moses Cone; and the Appalachian Heritage Museum are to the south. The area was settled in the 18th cent.Boone
