[′bak ‚ärch] (architecture) A concealed arch which carries backing of a wall, where the exterior facing is carried by a lintel.

back arch

An arch that supports an inner wall where the outer wall is supported in a different manner, such as a brick arch behind a stone lintel. See also: arch

arrière-voussure 1. A rear vault; an arch or vault in a thick wall carrying the thickness of the wall, esp. one over a door or window frame. 2. A relieving arch behind the face of a wall.
