b. 1587, first white child of English parents to be born in America. She was the daughter of Ananias and Elenor Dare, members of Sir Walter Raleigh's ill-fated colony that settled Roanoke IslandRoanoke Island,
12 mi (19 km) long and 3 mi (4.8 km) wide, NE N.C., off the Atlantic coast between Croatan (W) and Roanoke (E) sounds in the Outer Banks. Manteo is the chief town, and tourism and fishing are the principal industries.

Dare, Virginia

(1587–?88) born in Roanoke, Va. She was the first English child born in North America. Her parents were Ananias Dare and Elinor White. She disappeared along with the 117 Roanoke colonists in 1588.
