In northeastern NC on Albemarle Sound; organized as Shaftsbury Precinct of Albemarle County in 1668 (prior to statehood); name changed about 1681. Name Origin: For the Chowan River, which forms its western border; itself named for the Chowanoc, an Algonquian Indian tribe, probably 'those in the south.'
