Astrophysical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic

a scientific research institute in Alma-Ata.

The institute was founded in 1942. (Until 1950 it was part of the Institute of Astronomy and Physics of the Kazakhstan branch of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR.) At the institute’s mountain observatory (approximately 1,500 m above sea level) a 50-cm Maksutov telescope, a 70-cm reflector, and a number of other instruments are mounted. The high altitude observation base (over 3,000 m above sea level) includes a station for study of the corona. The institute’s main work is in atmospheric optics, physics of the sun and bodies of the solar system, the interrelation of stars and interstellar space, the dynamics of stellar systems, cosmogony, and cosmology. Publications of the institute are Izvestiia (1955–62) and Trudy (since 1961), which covers various subjects.
