desorption ionisation

desorption ionisation

A general term used for mass spectrometry methods in which ions are generated directly from a sample by rapidly inputting energy into the condensed phase sample (e.g., secondary ion mass spectrometry, fast atom bombardment, californium fission fragment desorption, and plasma desorption). There may be no discrete thermal desorption, but rather a transfer of nonvolatile sample molecules into the gas phase as ions for subsequent analysis.
