A hormone secreted by the placenta, throughout pregnancy, to maintain the CORPUS LUTEUM of the ovary. The corpus luteum produces the steroid hormones oestrogen and progesterone, especially the latter, and this prevents further ovulation and menstruation during the remainder of the pregnancy. At the end of pregnancy, the loss of the placenta allows for eventual resumption of ovulation. The hormone is available as a drug for the treatment of infertility, poor gonadal development and delayed puberty under such brand names as Choragon and Pregnyl.
