Location:8 miles east of Sheffield on US 290 (a scenic loop off I-10). Take Exit 343 and follow US 290 to park.
Facilities:Nature trail, historic structure, interpretive center, park store, restrooms.
Activities:Nature study, historical interpretation.
Special Features:Fort Lancaster is one of five historic Texas forts designated as State Historic Sites. (The others are Fort Griffin, Fort Leaton, Fort McKavett, and Fort Richardson.) It was originally established in 1855 to protect the route between San Antonio and El Paso. When Texas joined the Confederacy in 1861, the fort was officially abandoned. Park features site tours and exhibits on history, natural history, and archeology.
