Special Features:Colonel Zachary Taylor established and commanded the garrison at FortJesup, which was built as a border outpost in 1822. Taylor's troopsestablished law and order in the area, and Fort Jesup remained animportant military post for nearly 25 years. The original kitchen/messhall is the only historic structure remaining from the largereservation that once spread across the frontier. The reconstructedofficers' quarters building now houses the site's visitor center. In1961, Fort Jesup was designated a National Historic Landmark
