A term applied to those individuals, particularly in eastern Europe and the USSR, refusing to conform with the politics and beliefs of the society in which they live. Often persecuted, imprisoned, exiled or executed.

in medieval Western European states, all those who “strayed” away from Catholicism. Dissidents were considered heretics by the church. Since the Reformation, the term has come to refer to all those not belonging to the state religion (Catholic or Protestant) in a given country. In 16th- and 17th-century England, the issue of the civil rights of dissidents (dissenters) was a source of sharp conflict. Civil rights for dissidents was a major issue in 16th- and 17th-century France (the Huguenots) and 17th- and 18th-century Poland.
