couplant (kŭp′lănt) A medium, typically a viscous, nontoxic liquid or gel, that transmits ultrasonic energy from its source to the object to be stimulated. In respiratory care, a couplant in a nebulizer transmits the ultrasonic vibrations into a chamber in which a medication is held. The ultrasonic energy aerosolizes the medication for inhalation by the patient. |
