释义 | chondrodystrophyenUK
ChondrodystrophyenUKChondrodystrophy(also called achondroplasia), abnormal skeletal development resulting in dwarfism, with asymmetrical shortening of the extremities and a normal trunk. The inhibition of bone growth is caused by abnormal ossification in the embryonic period owing to irregular cell distribution in the growth cartilage. The disease is believed to be hereditary. The abnormal growth of the extremities is accompanied by deformation, primarily of the legs, but affected persons are often very strong and dextrous. The functioning of the musculoskeletal system deteriorates and arthrosis develops as the deformity progresses. The treatment of chondrodystrophy is orthopedic and is aimed mainly at preventing further deformation by corrective operations and the use of specialized apparatus. The affected lower extremities may be lengthened by means of traction apparatus. REFERENCEVolkov, M. V. Bolezni kostei u detei.
