Size: 793 acres.
Established: Proclaimed on August 9, 1916, as Capulin Mountain National Monument; name changed on December 31, 1987.
Location:In the northeastern corner of New Mexico. Park entrance is via NM 325, 3 miles north of the town of Capulin. Capulin is 58 miles west of Clayton on US 64 and 87, and 30 miles east of Raton and I-25.
Facilities:Picnic area, rest rooms (é), visitor center (é), museum/exhibit, self-guided tour/trail. Entrance fee required.
Activities:Hiking, auto touring, ranger-led programs.
Special Features:Approximately 60,000 years ago, the rain of cooling cinders formedCapulin Volcano, a nearly perfectly-symmetrical cinder cone, rising morethan 1000 feet above the surrounding landscape. A two-mile paved road to the top of the volcano and paved trails into thecrater and around its rim provide visitors an unusual opportunity to see the inside of a volcano.
