Boma was the capital of the Congo Free State (after 1908 the Belgian Congo) from 1887 to 1926, when it was changed to Leopoldville (now Kinshasa).Bomaa city in the Democratic Republic of Zaire, in the province of Lower Zaire. Population, 33,100 (1960). The city is a port (accessible to seagoing vessels) in the estuary of the Congo River. Boma exports wood, oil palm products, bananas, cocoa, and rubber. The city has an airport. Other industries include the processing of agricultural raw materials, a brewery, ship repair, and fishing.
