acoustic wave

A pressure wave transmitted through a gas, liquid, or solid as a result of small displacements of the particles in the medium. The medium has elasticity and inertia; when set into motion it undergoes alternate compressions and rarefactions that travel through the medium with a speed characteristic of the medium.
