Counts, George S. (Sylvester)

(1889–1974) educator; born in Baldwin City, Kans. A professor at Teachers College, Columbia University (1927–56), Counts was also a government advisor and an impassioned critic of American schools, whose primary function, he argued, should be to promote democratic values. His books include The American Road to Culture (1930) and Education and American Civilization (1952).
