baroque art

baroque art

(c 1600–1720) Drawing on the exuberance of mannerism and on the resurgence of Roman Catholic doctrine, the aim of baroque art was to unite the main parts of building, sculpture, and painting into an overall dramatic effect that is mainly “frontal,” i.e. it is best seen from one, rather than many viewpoints. Its exuberance and monumentality make it one of the most robust movements in art history.
