Eastern Mountains

Eastern Mountains

mountains on the eastern side of the Indian peninsula, between the Mahanadi River in the north and the Godavari in the south; part of the Eastern Ghats. The Eastern Mountains are about 500 km long. The eastern slope faces the Bay of Bengal and is steep; the opposite slope is more gradual. The highest point is Devodi-Munda (1,680 m). The Eastern Mountains are composed mainly of gneiss and granite. They consist of individual un-evenly raised clumpy massifs with leveled surfaces which are deeply scored by narrow valleys. The slopes have thick deciduous monsoon forests, and there are manganese deposits.
